The neighbors had kept to a schedule to take care of the sheep for me all that week. Early that Thursday morning, I watched Tony’s truck pull into the driveway and go straight to the barn. School had started that Monday but I wasn’t there. I missed the kids, especially Jake. We’d formed a bond, and I was anxious to see how he would do after the long vacation.

Carol came after school, or, if she was busy, one of her sons showed up. She usually stopped in for a short visit and called frequently to see if I needed anything from the store. I knew any offer of payment would be taken as an insult and quickly rebuffed. It left me feeling frustrated instead of simply grateful as I should’ve been.

They held the spinning group at my home that week, now that I was more mobile. My emotions were in a constant state of flux. Grateful one moment for these wonderful friends, afraid of being obligated to them the next.

How would I repay these new people who’d entered my life? They brushed aside all my thanks, saying that’s what neighbors did around here. It left me with guilt feelings when I should’ve been feeling relief.

I finally cast aside the boot and was able to walk without the crutches. I’d be back in school next week as planned. I still had a slight limp because of the pain and stiffness, but I knew if I continued my exercises and used a little caution I’d be as good as new. The one bright spot in my weeks of incapacitation was that I got a lot of spinning done. Thankfully, I only needed one foot to peddle my spinning wheel. I now had enough yarn to start on a sweater.
